Tubatulabals of Kern Valley
About us
We are the Tubatulabals, a proud Indigenous people whose roots are deeply intertwined with the rich landscape of the Kern Valley in California. Our community has thrived here for millennia, embodying a culture that harmoniously blends with the natural environment.
Our History
The Tubatulabals have been the stewards of the Kern Valley for thousands of years. Our traditional homeland encompasses the picturesque region of the southern Sierra Nevada, including the Kern River and surrounding areas. Our ancestors were skilled hunter-gatherers who lived sustainably, utilizing the valley’s abundant resources. Our deep understanding of the land allowed us to thrive and maintain a balanced relationship with nature.
Our historical narratives are preserved through oral traditions and storytelling. These stories not only recount our past but also convey our values, beliefs, and the lessons learned through generations. The oral histories of the Tubatulabals highlight our enduring connection to the land and our ongoing role as its caretakers.
